Role guide · General management

At this level
you are not hired for what you know.
You are hired for what you decided.

When a general manager is being hired, functional experience is assumed. What gets assessed is the size of what you ran and the quality of your decisions under pressure. A CV listing responsibilities says nothing about either.

P&L + headcount without those two figures your experience cannot be placed
🇪🇸 ES
The underlying problem

The job is understood.
Your scale is not.

Everyone knows what a general manager does. That is why describing the function is the most expensive mistake available: it adds no information.

What the hirer does not know is how big the company was, what you found on arrival and what you left behind. Running an €8M business with 40 people and a €120M one with 600 are two different jobs sharing a title.

And there is a second layer almost nobody writes down: the hard decisions. Closing a line, restructuring, changing the business model. That is what separates a manager from a general manager.

What has to be there

The figures that
place you.

General management is measured by magnitude and by delta: where the business stood when you arrived and where it stood when you left.

💶
P&L under management
Revenue and result of the unit you ran. It is the first filter and it decides whether your application gets read at all.
👥
Organisation size
Headcount, reporting layers, number of sites or countries. Leading through three directors is not leading through fifteen.
📈
Movement during your tenure
Where the business was on entry and on exit: sales, margin, EBITDA, debt. The delta matters more than the absolute.
🔀
Structural decisions
Restructurings, closures, openings, model changes, post-acquisition integrations. The most valuable part and the most often omitted.
🏛️
Governance and ownership
Reporting to a board, a fund, a founding family or a foreign parent. It changes entirely the kind of leader being sought.
🌍
Scope
One unit, one country, a region, the whole group. And whether you held full P&L or only functional responsibility.
What sinks it

Five things that cost you
on a general management CV.

Describing the function
"Responsible for the overall management of the company" could be written by anyone. It does not separate you from any other holder of the title.
Leaving out the size
Without revenue and headcount your application cannot be compared. In doubt, whoever filters assumes the smaller end.
Staying silent on context
Growing in an expanding market and holding the business through a sector decline are very different achievements. The second is usually harder and almost nobody tells it.
Only good outcomes
A general manager with twenty years has taken hard decisions. A well-handled restructuring builds more credibility than a list of wins.
Confusing leading with coordinating
If you did not hold the P&L, say so. Presenting functional leadership as general management surfaces in the first interview and burns the application.
The ATS detail

One job,
many labels.

General management appears under very different titles depending on company size and origin. A multinational looks for "Managing Director"; a family business for "Gerente". Many screening systems, when filtering on exact terms, do not connect them.

Make sure your CV carries the titles you have genuinely held, including the English ones if you worked in an international environment.

General Manager Managing Director CEO Chief Executive Officer Country Director Division Director Executive Director Site General Manager President

These are related titles, not equivalents: responsibilities and scope differ between them. Only use the ones you have genuinely held — a title you never had collapses in the first interview.

How ZenitJob handles it

Your track record,
ordered around what each board wants.

An application to a family business and one to a fund-backed company need opposite emphasis: continuity and trust in one, transformation and return in the other. From the same history.

Base CV
You cover each stage
You dictate block by block: what you found, what you decided, what you left. The AI structures it into achievements with figure, period and context — including the decisions you never wrote down.
2
Job analysis
Its priorities are read
A growth mandate is not a turnaround mandate. The AI extracts the terms and competencies the advert repeats.
3
Adaptation
What matters moves up
If they want transformation, your restructurings lead. If they want consolidation, your stability and margins do. Same facts, different hierarchy.

A recovery plan should not cut every line at the same rate.

When a business needs to rebuild margin and cash, the first job is to separate costs that protect capability from costs that preserve inertia.

Consolidating one site released overhead, but protecting engineering and service allowed the business to keep growing. EBITDA moved from €4.2M to €8.9M and debt fell without hollowing out the company.

Which capability would you protect even under a turnaround mandate?

What matters when this profile is reviewed

These details establish the scale of the mandate and the movement achieved during it.

  1. Economic accountability: full P&L, revenue, EBITDA, margin and debt.
  2. Organisational scale: headcount, sites, countries, executive team and reporting layers.
  3. Business movement: entry position, growth, profitability and final position.
  4. Governance and ownership: board, family shareholder, fund or parent company.
  5. Structural decisions: recovery, closures, openings, integration and protection of critical capabilities.

What changed and why it works better

  • P&L, headcount and sites establish the scale of the mandate.
  • Revenue, EBITDA and debt show the movement under Alejandro’s leadership.
  • The board and shareholders define the governance environment.
  • Difficult decisions add context to both the result and leadership style.

This example uses fictional data. The name, companies, figures and estimated-match results are illustrative and do not refer to any real person, organisation or job posting.

The format

You know what to say.
Now decide how it looks.

A General Manager CV uploaded to a company portal is not laid out like one that lands straight on a headhunter's desk: the first is read by software and needs a single column and no photo; the second is read by a person and can afford a sidebar, a photo and typography with weight. Both are there — grouped by that criterion, not by taste — in the 34 executive CV templates: you can see them without signing up, and they are included in the free plan.

Start with your base CV

Your decisions
are your CV.

Tell your track record out loud and ZenitJob turns it into achievements with figure, context and decision. Then it tailors that to each role.
